SHELTER IN PLACE (St. Thomas – USVI)

The National Emergency Planning and Training Association (NEPTA) was selected to provide grant management consulting services for the Sugar Bay Resort and Spa (SBRS). NEPTA will complete a Federal grant application to secure funding to make the SBRS a “first of its kind” resilient self-sustaining safe-room/shelter complete with generators, chillers, storage, and other services. This will provide shelter to withstand up to 200mph winds and protect workers, first responders, emergency response personnel, hundreds of residents, and those that are residing at the SBRS during an extreme weather event to include hurricanes. Essentially the entire facility will be self-sustaining during and after a disaster. NEPTA thanks the Virgin Island Territorial Emergency Management Agency (VITEMA), the Virgin Island Public Finance Authority(VIPFA), the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), and especially the entire staff at the Sugar Bay Resort and Spa and it’s management team.

This is a historic undertaking involving several state and federal agencies. It is anticipate the benefits will outweigh the cost more than 30:1. We are very proud to be a part of history in this ever changing disaster recovery arena .
