Practical Checklists & Resources for Individuals and Families

MYREDFOLDER® – Your Family’s Emergency Information Center Keep all your critical
documents, contacts, and plans in one secure, portable place.

1. Build Your Family Emergency Plan (5 Minutes to Start)

Choose two meeting places:
o Near your home (in case of fire)
o Outside your neighborhood (in case you must evacuate)
– Designate an out-of-state emergency contact: ______________________________
– Teach every family member how to text or call this contact.
– Plan how you will reunite if phones are down.
– Practice your plan twice a year.

2. Important Documents – Use MYREDFOLDER®

Keep copies of these in your MYREDFOLDER® (waterproof, portable binder or digital
folder):
– Driver’s licenses / State IDs
– Passports & birth certificates
– Social Security cards
– Insurance policies (home, auto, flood, health)
– Recent utility bills
– Bank and credit card information
– Medical records & prescriptions
– Pet vaccination records
– Wills, deeds, and power of attorney
– Family photos for identification purposes
Tip: Store one physical copy at home, one with a trusted relative, and a scanned digital copy in
the cloud.

3. Home – Shelter-in-Place Kit (72 Hours Minimum)
Store enough supplies for every person and pet to stay indoors safely:
Water & Food
– 1 gallon of water per person per day (minimum 3 days)
– Non-perishable food (canned goods, energy bars, peanut butter)
– Manual can opener
Health & Hygiene
– First-aid kit (include prescription medications for 7–14 days)
– Hand sanitizer, disinfectant wipes, soap
– Toilet paper, garbage bags, plastic ties
– Feminine supplies, diapers, pet food
Safety & Light
– Battery-powered or hand-crank radio
– Flashlights and extra batteries
– Whistle
– Multi-tool or Swiss Army knife
Comfort & Warmth
– Blankets, sleeping bags, or emergency thermal blankets
– Change of clothes for each person
– Rain ponchos

4. Car Emergency Kit (Keep in Every Vehicle)
Always have these items in your trunk or back seat:
– Jumper cables
– Reflective safety vest & road flares / reflective triangles
– Small first-aid kit
– Flashlight & extra batteries
– Bottled water (2–3 bottles) & non-perishable snacks
– Blanket or emergency thermal blanket
– Small tool kit (screwdriver, pliers, duct tape)
– Tire pressure gauge & portable air pump or fix-a-flat
– Ice scraper & small shovel (winter areas)
– Extra cash in small bills
– Copy of your MYREDFOLDER® documents in a waterproof bag

5. Workplace “Can’t Get Home” Kit
Keep a small bag at your desk or in your locker:
– Comfortable walking shoes
– Change of clothes (including socks & underwear)
– Lightweight jacket or rain poncho
– Bottled water & energy bars
– Small first-aid kit & personal medications
– Flashlight (keychain size)
– Portable phone charger & charging cable
– Cash ($50–100 in small bills)
– Copy of emergency contacts and MYREDFOLDER® summary

6. Quick-Reference Checklists (Tear-Out Pages)
Before a Storm / Disaster
– Fill gas tanks and extra gas cans
– Charge all phones and power banks
– Secure outdoor items
– Know your evacuation zone and routes
After a Disaster
– Check on neighbors
– Avoid downed power lines
– Only use generators outdoors
– Document damage with photos

7. Special Considerations
– Pets: 3-day supply of food, water, medications, leash, carrier, and vaccination records.
– Children & Elderly: Comfort items, games, extra medications, and medical equipment.
– Medical Needs: 14-day supply of prescription drugs, oxygen, CPAP, etc.
– Power Outages: Battery-operated fans, cooling towels, or space heaters as appropriate.
