Practice your escape plan

Being ready as you can for a natural disaster is the best thing you can do to get through this successfully.

• Have an evacuation plan ready for when disaster strikes. Be sure to practice this a few times so you know what to do instinctively when the dreaded time arrives.
• Know what your options are in each of these four scenarios- earthquakes, floods, hurricanes, and fires.
• Always listen to the instructions from the authorities as the first point of call.
• Protect yourself, your family, and your pets by seeking shelter indoors if you have no other option. Otherwise, seek the nearest available emergency shelter for assistance.

Prepare an emergency kit

Your emergency kit will help tide you over as you seek refuge during a natural disaster.

• Your emergency kit should include the essentials you’ll need to get by if you can’t get access to your home. It might include non-perishable food items, extra clothes, a bit of cash, a first aid kit, water, a whistle, etc
• Make sure you have a grab-and-go bag ready, too. This is a simplified version of an emergency kit. You should ideally have at least three grab-and-go bags – one at work, one at home, and one in your car ready to go at any given time.

Make sure you have the necessary insurance

• Having insurance can help to compensate for any losses sustained during a natural disaster.
• If you want to purchase a home located in a flood plain, you will be obligated to take out flood insurance.
• Take out business interruption insurance to safeguard your income if your business premises are affected by a natural disaster.

Preparing for a natural disaster is not the most pleasant thing to do. However, you can improve the probability of the outcome if you plan wisely and have safeguards in place, such as the necessary insurance, to help safely steer you out of this emergency.
